The Administrative Regulations on Special Symbols entered into force on 13 July 1996. There are 22 articles in total, which aim to clarify the administration of special symbols.

The key points are as follows:

  1. The term “special symbols” refer to names and abbreviations, emblems, mascots and the like composed of words and/or graphics used in national and international cultural, sports, scientific research and other social welfare activities.

  2. The holding of the above-mentioned social welfare activities shall be approved by the State Council.

  3. The validity period of a special symbol is four years, and the owner of the special symbol can apply for extension three months before the expiration of the validity.

  4. The owner of a special symbol may use the symbol on advertisements, souvenirs and other articles related to their social welfare activities, and permit others to use the same.
