The Law on National Medals and National Honorary Titles was promulgated in 2015 and entered into force on January 1, 2016.

There are 21 articles in total.

The key points are as follows:

1.National medals and national honorary titles are the highest state honors.

2.The Republic Medal set up by the State shall be bestowed on eminent people who have made enormous contributions to and made meritorious achievements in the building of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the protection of the State.

3.The Friendship Medal set up by the State shall be bestowed on foreigners who have made outstanding contributions to the China’s socialist modernization, the promotion of exchange and cooperation between China and foreign countries, and the protection of world peace.

4.National honorary titles set up by the State shall be bestowed on eminent people who have made major contributions in economy, society, national defense, foreign affairs, education, science and technology, culture, health, sports and other fields and industries and who enjoy high reputation.
