MPS: China Crushes Myanmar Crime Syndicates

Categories: China Legal Trends

On 27 May 2024, China’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS) held a press conference to announce the significant achievements in the special operation against crimes involving China in northern Myanmar since July 2023.  Over 49,000 suspects involved in telecom fraud have been handed over to Chinese authorities, and the “Four Major Families” crime syndicates in Kokang, northern Myanmar, have been dealt a devastating blow.

Over the past year, the MPS has dispatched multiple task forces to relevant Southeast Asian countries under international law enforcement cooperation mechanisms, and dismantled 37 overseas fraud dens.

Statistics show that over the past five years, police authorities nationwide have solved 1.945 million telecom fraud cases. The number of monthly cases filed nationwide has decreased year-on-year for eight consecutive months, and the amount of financial loss due to fraud has dropped by nearly 30%. The rising trend of telecom fraud has been effectively curbed.
