On 5 May 2023, China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA) issued a notice on the “Restricted Export List of Works by Late Chinese Artists Who Died after 1911 in 8 Categories” (hereinafter the “Notice”, 关于颁布1911年后已故书画等8类作品限制出境名家名单的通知).

The Notice lists renowned Chinese calligraphers, painters and other artists who have passed away since 1911. For artists included in the list, their works or representative works are not allowed to leave China.

The types of works on the list cover eight categories, including calligraphy and painting, ceramics, sculpture, fans, embroidery, seals, bongs, and lacquerware.

Some of these artists’ works are not allowed to leave China. At the same time, some other artists’ representative works are not allowed to leave China.

According to the NCHA, this regulation is to prevent the loss of valuable cultural relics in modern times.
