In August 2024, China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) released key case-handling data of national procuratorates from January to June 2024.

In criminal cases, the procuratorate is responsible for reviewing arrests and prosecutions. In the first half of 2024, procuratorates nationwide approved the arrest of 367,000 people and prosecuted 761,000 people, representing year-on-year increases of 18.5% and 6.8%, respectively.

In civil and administrative cases, the procuratorate is responsible for supervising civil and administrative judgments and making prosecutorial recommendations for retrials. In the first half of the year, following the prosecutorial recommendations for retrials from the procuratorates, the courts ordered retrials and subsequently altered the original decisions in over 4,600 civil cases, an increase of 1.4 times year-on-year. The procuratorates issued more than 2,600 supervisory opinions, including prosecutorial recommendations to administrative organs. The proportion of cases in which courts changed their decisions based on protests and recommendations for retrials was 68.8% and 89.2%, respectively.

Additionally, the procuratorates are also responsible for handling public interest litigation cases. In the first half of the year, the procuratorates filed and handled 86,000 public interest litigation cases, including 77,000 administrative public interest cases and over 8,800 civil public interest cases.
